Heartbeat for members

What free is for

Free is a real plan, not a trial. If you go quiet, everyone on your list gets an email — every time, in the order you chose, with nothing held back. It stays that way for free. A pet’s safety should not depend on a subscription, and nothing obliged us to make that true.

Free is email, and only email — which is a change from what this page said before, so here is the reason. Before Heartbeat can text or ring a number, somebody has to prove that number reaches them, and proving it costs us real money: carriers and their gatekeepers are strict about numbers in a way nobody is about email. A free tier that offered texts or calls would be offering a channel it had never confirmed — a promise about a number nobody checked, discovered on the one night it mattered. So free gets the channel with no gatekeeper, and it gets it without limits or rationing.

What members get

Free is a chance; being a member is more chances. Free asks each contact once, and a second time only by their consent; members get one final round at the end, and it reaches a handset directly — a text and a call, which is the part an email cannot do. If the first round goes unanswered it comes back around: every contact again, emailed, texted and called, spaced out so it reads as somebody who kept trying rather than an alarm going off. And it asks you before anyone else is disturbed, so a false alarm is one tap to call off.

Both plans hold up to three contacts in each group and nine pets. Members pay for texts and calls, not for more people.

Where it is going for members

For members, Heartbeat keeps getting smarter. The aim is monitoring that learns your everyday rhythm — when your phone usually moves, when it usually charges, what an ordinary quiet afternoon looks like for you — so it can tell a lazy Sunday from a real silence and wake your people only when it truly counts. Fewer false alarms is not a convenience feature: a contact who has never been woken for nothing is a contact who answers at 3am. We will describe these abilities here precisely as they ship, and not before.

The numbers

Prices are shown in the app before you are charged and are managed by the App Store or Google Play, including cancellation and refunds. No card is asked for to use Heartbeat at all. And if you cancel, nothing about your safety changes — you move back to the free version, which is a real one.
